Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy (2011) review

Renault’s new Megane RS 265 Trophy recently smashed the Nurburgring lap record for front-wheel drive cars. But does that translate into more on-road fun? Read on for our first drive of the new Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy to find out...

I didn’t even know there was a lap record for FWD cars. It’s a bit like hearing that Blackburn reserves beat Man U’s B-team 1-0 in a friendly. So what time did it set?

The 265 rounded the Nordschleife circuit in 8min 8sec, beating the previous record – held by the stripped ou,t old-shape Megane R26R – by 9sec. To put that in context, a Porsche Cayman takes around 8min 04sec to complete a lap, while a 911 GT3 4.0 can do it in 7min 27sec.

I’m impressed. So what’s the secret ingredient?

Well unlike previous Trophy-badged Renaults, the 265 doesn’t have any trick suspension components over and above the standard Cup-chassis’d, LSD-equipped car on which it’s based. Except for a very sticky set of Bridgestone Potenzas, that is. They don’t look that trick, not like the old R26R’s optional Toyo track day shoes or a Michelin Pilot Cup Sport tyre. And they don’t need bone-dry roads to work properly. These things are incredible whatever the road surface, working together with the Cup’s limited slip differential and subtle ESP system to deliver phenomenal cornering performance. That’s cornering as in grip through the corner and traction on the way out. The regular Cup is superb, but the 265 is definitely better.

No chassis mods? What about the engine?

That’s where the 265 bit comes in. That’s the power in metric horsepower, which equates to 261bhp, up from 247bhp in the standard car thanks to a revised intake system and turbo boost increase from 2.3bar to 2.5bar. A modest 14bhp gain is way short of the 300bhp some mags were speculating the Trophy would have. The 0-62mph sprint falls just 0.1sec to 6sec dead, and the top speed creeps up a measly 2mph to 158mph. But you can feel the difference. It sounds angrier and pulls harder than the standard car, the wheel jiggling in your hands under hard acceleration in the lower gears but never enough to becoming full-blown, lane changing torque steer like it does in the Focus RS.

Any downsides?

Well it still feels Renault-cheap inside, the rear visibility is poor, the ride is terrible and the brake and throttle pedals are slightly too far apart for heel and toeing if you’re into that stuff – which you might want to be because there’s no dual-clutch gearbox option. That’s a small list though and easy to forgive when a car is this much fun. The important point is this: if you want the most exciting hot hatch in the business, this is it.

So what’s it going to cost me?

The price is £27,820, which is £3200 more than the Cup it’s based on, but really only £1255 more by the time you’ve factored in cost of equipping a Cup with the 265’s standard Recaro buckets, LED lights, 19in wheels and metallic paint. For reference, a posher, softer Renaultsport Megane 250 costs £25,020 or £27,220 with the Cup suspension, LSD and Recaros. If you do want a 265 though, you better get in there quick. Just 500 will be made and only 50 of those are coming to the UK this autumn.

Verdict

The 265 is brilliant to drive, but £1200 for some different rubber and an ECU remap isn’t spectacular value. Part of Renault’s problem is that the standard Cup-chassis Megane is simply so damn good. However, if you were thinking of chucking a few options on a standard Cup or 250 anyway, you really should get your name down for a Trophy. Alternatively, check out the classifieds for a used R26R: £10k less and just as much fun.

Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy (2011)

Renaultsport fanatics rejoice! Renault have dusted-off the Trophy nameplate for the new Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy, a 500-unit limited edition model. Set to debut at the World Series by Renault race at the Nurburgring on 18-19 June 2011, the Megane 265 Trophy has been developed to take on hot-hatch rivals including VW Group's Scirocco R and Golf R.

I've been in a cave since the Renault 19. What's an RS Megane 265 Trophy?

Welcome to the internet, then. The merry engineers at Renault Sport in Dieppe reserve the Trophy monicker for special editions of their working-class hero cars. It started with the 2005 Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy, and continued with the Megane 225 Trophy of the same year.

RS Megane 265 Trophy: the enhanced spec

The 2011 Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy gets a series of engine mods, including a rise in turbo boost pressure from 2.0 to 2.5 bar, and a revised intake. The result is a power kick to 261bhp, from the standard Megane 250's 247bhp. Torque rises to 266 lb/ft, making it the most powerful RS Megane ever. The tweaked engine shaves 0.1 sec off the 0-62mph time (now 6.0 seconds) and top speed goes from 'ou revoirUK license' 156mph to 'yes it's the 265 Trophy, officer' 158mph. The Megane 265 Trophy is officially Renaultsports's fastest ever car. For now...
Helping the RS Megane 265 Trophy's torque-steer limiting front struts and limited slip differential put the power to the ground are a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE 050 tyres wrapped around 19-inch Speedline alloy wheels in brake dust obscuring black. The other exterior clues to this special edition are the red Trophy decals on the doors and front air intake, and LED daytime running lights.

Inside, you'll find standard-fit Recaro bucket seats, Renaultsport yellow seatbelts and trim stitching and the Renaultsport Monitor onboard computer for performance data. Lastly there is the all-important numbered plaque denoting your limited edition status. Just like a Megane Coupe Monaco GP edition, but for people who do trackdays.
Speaking of which, your purchase of a RS 265 Trophy grants you a year's worth of Renaultsport trackday participation in 2012, valued at £650. The perfect environment to test the expanded performance of the new 265 Trophy.

When can I get my hands on a Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy?

You'll need £27,820 (add £415  for a Diamond Black roof, the sole option) and you can have one in either yellow or black. But be quick, the UK only gets 50 of the 500-unit run and Renaultsport owners' forums will already be feverishly discussing this exclusive new hot hatch.

The orderbooks open on the 20th June, and first deliveries begin at the end of July. If you're planning on camping out at your Renault dealer to be first in line, do send us updates.

Renault R-Space concept car (2011) at 2011 Geneva motor show

Renault will show off a glimpse of its thinking for the Scenic segment with the new R-Space concept car at the 2011 Geneva motor show. It’s a 4.3m long show car that’s designed to inject some pizzazz where today’s Scenic prefers a more sober style.
The new-fangled Renault look as pioneered by incoming design chief Laurens van den Acker is present and correct: there’s a large diamond on the nose and heaps more character than the current MPV. And check out the panoramic windscreen which blends seamlessly into the roof with a chequerboard of varying transparency.
The R-Space is the latest in a string of Renault concept cars, and each is designed to represent a different life stage. The Dezir sports car was – fittingly – red, while the Juke-style Captur crossover is orange (for mountain-style ‘Explore’ mode) while the family-oriented R-Space is honey-coloured.

Inside the 2011 Renault R-Space

Handclap suicide doors open to reveal a huge opening with no B-pillar. The R-Space’s cabin is designed to represent the family home; the front-seat passengers sit in two buckets, with a sofa-style bench seat in the back.
Don’t go expecting the R-Space’s clever rear seat package to survive for production, however. Twenty-seven motors power miniature upholstered cubes which pop up or down to configure the rear space to accommodate adult passengers, children or luggage. They’re so clever, they can create booster seats, pews for adults, children or lower flat to create a flat load bay. Like the 21in wheels, this is surely an ask too far for production MPVs.

What’s under the bonnet of the Renault R-Space?

The R-Space is powered by a 900cc turbo three-cylinder. It develops 109bhp and heralds the new TCe range coming to Renaults in 2012. The 0.9 has direct-injection and stop start.
It’s yet another example of downsizing: Renault claims it mixes the performance of a 1.6, yet produces just 95g/km of CO2 and averages 76mpg. The concept car mates the engine to a twin-clutch gearbox.
Top speed? 124mph and 0-62mph takes 11sec. That shape isn’t just a huge improvement on the ditchwater styling of today’s Scenic – it’s aerodynamic too. Renault quotes a 0.28 drag coefficient
