Audi R8 V8 Spyder (2011) CAR review

The lesser-engined R8 is arguably the most conceptually perfect of Audi’s supercar family. Why? Because it’s the R8 that most closely resembles an extreme Audi without delusions of Ferrari. You can admire it as much for its honesty as for its ability. And, even without its roof, boy does it have ability…

No V10 and no roof? Compromised surely?

You might not be saying that at 186mph. In fact, you might not be saying ANYTHING at 186mph. But the R8 V8 feels perfectly engined, beautifully balanced and in no way structurally hampered by its rooflessness. It’s incredibly comfortable with the roof down, even at speed (though possibly not at 186mph) and driving it this way allows you to drink in the delightfully mellow throatiness of the 4.2-litre 24-valver behind you.
This isn’t a Ferrari-style howl or even the thunderous torque-rush of sister act Lamborghini – no, it’s more of a rising surge, an escalation of pitch rising to a racy crescendo up around the 7000rpm mark.

This model has a manual gearbox. Better or worse than the auto?

A matter of taste, obviously, but for me the manual wins through every time. You’ve got to hand it to Audi for delivering the six-speed shifter with an open gate, reminding us of the glorious past now busily being left behind by the supercar glitterati. The noisy clack of the aluminium stick slamming into the gate is delicious, and all the more so for the sympathetic stacking of the ratios which, unlike those long-geared, big-beat Lambos, allows you to play with the whole selection on a normal drive.
I recently had the pleasure of the open-gate manual in the Lamborghini Gallardo Balboni, but this R8 is even better because of that sympathetic usefulness. It defines the whole car. The R-tronic is naturally readily available and most R8s will pack it. Your call, but a nice dilemma to have.

What about the price? Can we call it good value?

That’s the beauty of the V8 model. Yes, it’s £96k, but that’s £20k less than the V10, and I absolutely guarantee you’ll never catch yourself yearning for those extra pots. Whether any Audi can ever really be lux enough to justify such a tag is a moot point. On the one hand, the interior is massively understated, beautifully built but willfully underdesigned, but on the other hand it’s pretty much knob-for-knob what you’ll get in your wildly pricey Gallardo.
If you wanted to criticise you’d have to admit that when the roof’s up the whole experience falters somewhat. It’s cramped in there, visibility is radically curtailed and the happy noise of the engine is replaced by a less pleasing vibey thrum from the wind. But you can say that about most super-cabrios.
And this R8 IS a super-cabrio.

Audi R8: more powerful V8 and V10 coming in 2012

The R8 supercar has been a big success story for Audi, but it’s not resting on its laurels. A facelift is coming and we hear in summer 2012, it’ll get a range of stronger engines.
The 5.2-litre V10 will be tuned to a punchier 533bhp – up from 518bhp  – and our sources in Munich suggest a seven-speed dual clutch S-tronic gearbox will be launched for the first time. So far, only a delicious old-school Ferrari open-gate manual 'box has been available, or a clunky robotised R-tronic auto.

Audi plans changes to the 2012 R8 V8 too

The entry-level Audi R8 will be revised heavily in 2012 as well: CAR has learned that its 4.2-litre V8 will be upgraded to the same spec as the Audi RS5's: it'll therefore muster a more useful 444bhp, up from 424bhp.
Ingolstadt types confirm there will be GT and GT Spyder variants again.

Audi R8 vs Lamborghini Gallardo: the facelifts

Although the R8 will be mildly facelifted, we suspect it'll be a very subtle model year change to the physical design of the car. Noodling with headlamp designs, millimetric changes to the LED spacing, that sort of thing.
Over at Sant'Agata, we hear there is no further facelift planned for the Lambo Gallardo, the R8's cousin. More special editions will be forthcoming, but Lambo fans will have to wait a further three years for the successor to the Gallardo.

Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Black Series (2011)

Mercedes-Benz AMG is using the 2011 German GP to preview its fourth Black Series model: the C63 AMG Black Series, the cheapest – at a still chunky €97,000 plus local taxes – Black Series ever.

What is the Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Black Series?

Black Series acts as a no-comprises halo model for AMG, with wilder styling, more power, less weight, stiffer suspension and no rear seats. The Black Series template also calls for a two-door, fixed roof bodyshell, even if the base car is only offered with a folding hardtop roof. Hence the C63’s predecessors are theCLK63 Black Series, SLK55 Black Series and SL65 Black Series – the latter two models having their folding hardtops replaced with a fixed roof.
The C63 Black Series retains the C63’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8, but power swells from the standard car’s 451bhp – or 480bhp if you spec the Performance Pack – to 510bhp. That brings it tantalisingly close to the E63, the C63’s big brother.

What else can you tell me?

It’s not only the engine that’s a match for the heavier E63: the track is 40mm wider at the front and 79mm wider at the rear, the latter thanks to the E63 donating its rear axle. The E63 also hands over its brakes, giving 360mm front and 390mm rear discs – a 30mm increase all-round. Meanwhile, E63-size rubber – 255/35 ZR19 front and 285/30 ZR19 rear – wraps around new 19-inch lightweight forged alloy wheels. Finally, the 40% limited slip differential that’s optional on regular AMG’s is standard.
All this, of course, would make the Black Series heavier than the C63, but with two lightweight front bucket seats and no back seats at all, it comes in 20kg lighter at 1635kg.
There are options too: for the first time you can re-specify that deleted rear bench, while a track package brings an optional carbon rear wing on stilts, semi-slick Michelin Cup tyres, plus active cooling for the rear differential. There’s also the possibility of a rollcage, although nothing is confirmed as yet.
Both left- and right-hand drive models will appear in showrooms from Jan 2012. AMG isn’t putting a cap on production, but the past three models accounted for just 1000 units in total worldwide, so you’re unlikely to pull up alongside another C63 Black Series at the traffic lights.

Found, Largest Water Clouds in the Universe

Scientists have recently discovered a giant water masses of the largest and oldest in the universe.

Cloud-shaped mass of water, 12 billion years old and is estimated to contain a mass of water in the amount of 140 trillion times the mass of water on earth.

Water vapor cloud was surrounded by a supermassive black hole known as quasars, is in a location which is about 12 billion light years from Earth.

As quoted by MSNBC news stations, the scientists said the findings prove that water has existed since the beginning of the existence of the universe

"Because the light we see left the quasar is more than 12 light years away, we see the presence of water is only about 1.6 mylar after the beginning of the universe," said Alberto Bolatto, one of the researchers from the University of Maryland through a statement.

"This discovery marks the presence of water is closer to a billion years the big bang event," said Bolatto.

Quasar is a luminous and most energetic objects in the universe. Quasar powered by a big black hole that sucks the gases and dust around it and then spew ebsar amounts of energy. The team of astronomers managed to detect and confirm the presence of water clouds around quasars, through two different telescopes, one in Hawaii and one in California.

Researchers estimate that the water vapor formed in the early emergence of the universe. Thus, the discovery of old clouds do not get too startled them. "This is further evidence of where the water seeped into the entire universe, even in times of very early," said lead study author, Matt Bradford, from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Tangible Ice

Quasar APM 08279 +5255 contains water vapor in the amount 4,000 times bigger than the Milky Way galaxy, the researchers said. This may be due to a lot of water in the form of the Milky Way ice, rather than steam.

Water vapor in the quasars are distributed around the massive black hole in the region which includes hundreds of light years in length. The cloud has a temperature of minus 63 degrees Fahrenheit (-17.2 degrees Celsius), however, the Earth's atmosphere has a density of 300 trillion times more dense than the cloud.

At least, the cloud that's five times hotter, and 10 to 100 times more dense than what is common in galaxies, including the Milky Way, the researchers said. The cloud water was also revealed other important info about quasars.

Measurement of water vapor and other molecules such as carbon monoxide, revealed the possibility that there is a sufficient amount of gas for a black hole to grow to about six times the previous size. These findings will be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters. (Ren)

Joint Human-Animal Invented in the UK

Scientists in England created hundreds of embryos formed from the combination of human and animal cells. Admitted for medical study, this practice has been run for three years with stealth.
Quoted from page Daily Mail, Saturday, July 23, 2011, has more than 150 embryos created in various university laboratories in the UK. Human animal embryos anomaly combined with the embryo is called 'hybrid'.
There are two ways of British scientists produce these embryos. First use 'cybrids', ie injecting human eggs into sperm cells of animals. Second, how 'chimeras', ie combining human cells with animal embryos.
According to the Daily Mail has been around 155 embryos produced by two ways. These embryos containing the genetic combination between man and beast. Scientists say the research is useful to develop embryonic stem cells that can cope with various diseases.
Known, there are three universities to develop this research, namely the University of Newcastle, Warwick and King's College. Their research is not illegal, because it has been governed by an Act of the British Fertility of Human Embryos in 2008.
Currently, research in all universities to stop temporarily due to lack of funds. However, scientists believe they can continue it again in the future.
Not without a hitch, this study challenged many people, including members of British parliament. "I am against the creation of human-animal combination before the parliament for matters of principle. No scientist can prove their justification," says independent MP, Lord Alton.
"Of the 80 treatments and cures from stem cells, all derived from adult stem cells, not embryos," said Alton again.
British pro-life activist, Josephine Quintavalle, also oppose this research. He said he was surprised that he study the unfolding of these disgusting. "Why do they keep it quiet? If they boast of what they do, why parliament fuss?" said Josephine. (Sj)

Mercedes CLC (2013)

This is the new Mercedes CLC, a ‘four-door coupe’ that will go on sale in 2013. Spawned from the new Mercedes A- and B-class – due in 2012 and 2011 respectively – it’s best to think of the new CLC as a shrunken CLS.
And just as Mercedes launched its CLS a whole generation ahead of Audi and BMW (the A7 was launched within months of the Mk2 CLS, and the 6-series Gran Coupe is still a year away), the CLC once again has no obvious opposition from the three-pointed star’s two big German rivals.
We revealed the seven new models that Mercedes plans for the A- and B-class earlier this week, and quite coincidentally these shots of the stylish 'saloon' were sent to us overnight by our spies in the Californian desert.

What do we know about the new Mercedes CLC?

That underneath the skin it uses the same front- (and four-) wheel drive platform that will underpin the new A- and B-classes, and that it’s a conventional architecture rather than the clever ‘sandwich’ set-up of the current cars.
After the B-class (due at the end of 2011) and the A-class (mid-2012) the CLC will be the third variant spun off Merc’s new modular system – there’s a small 4x4 coming too, plus coupe and cabriolet As. The CLC will measure 4560mm in length (today’s CLC is 4448mm long) and we hear there could be a Shooting Brake variant too.
Want to know want it'll look like? The F800 Styleconcept revealed in 2010 was Merc's teaser, though the production car won't be quite so voluptuous. But look closely, ignore the BMW-aping disguise, and you can see just how rakish the CLC is aft of the B-pillars – good luck getting in and out of the back. Look even more closely and you can spy the high-set multimedia Comand screen through the interior's disguise.

What else?

Mercedes has developed two new engines for the A- and B-classes and CLC. Petrol power comes courtesy of a direct injection and turbocharged 1.6 (dubbed M270) with either 121 or 154bhp, and the 1.8 oiler (known as OM561, and derived from the existing 2.1 diesel) comes with either 107 or 134bhp. Also all-new is the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the six-speed manual gearbox.
There’s also an AMG version planned. Originally Mercedes’ tuning house in Affalterbach wanted to equip the CLC25 (and A25) with a supercharged petrol engine, but after that proved too complicated AMG switched to a twin-turbo set-up. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder is believed to be good for around 335bhp, and will come with a four-wheel drive system to prevent torque steer. Both the transmission options should be offered on this hot AMG model.
