United States Navy is working to update their fleets with laser guns. In testing, a futurelaser weapon mounted on the cruiser managed to blow a motor boat in the waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The trial is the first carried out in the middle of the ocean and use a weapon that became a milestone for the country's navy.
"We succeeded in creating a devastating effect on the target is moving at high speed," says Nevin Carr, Chief of Naval Research, as quoted by FoxNews, April 13, 2011.
The trial was conducted off the California coast, using a laser weapon mounted on the deck of the ship naval defense trials, the USS Paul Foster. Lasers fired from a distanceto a small motor boat and cause a fire then raging. However, a number of details such as the certainty range, kept secret.
"We fired a laser in a matter of miles, not just the yards," said Carr.
For information, navy, army and other armed forces have collaborated to create a laserweapon called a 'directed energy' in the form of a broad array of new weapons.
The weapons consisted of a cannon mounted on the tanks to the guns mounted onaircraft or unmanned balloon. Tests are the first test fired a laser gun at sea, andevidence that the laser gun is not just a dream.
"This is the first time a laser beam at high power levels installed in warships, and uses power from the ship to beat the targets within a certain distance in the marineenvironment," said Peter Morrison, Program Officer for the Office of Naval Research.
"The navy is currently moving rapidly toward directed energy," he said. (eh)
